Jada Pinkett Smith's green Jean Paul Gaultier Oscars dress

Jada Pinkett Smith made best-dressed lists the world over (including our one), when she stepped out on the Oscars red-carpet last night in a spectacular Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown.

As we know, after the red-carpet appearance her family made headlines for other reasons - thanks to that on-stage altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock, and Smith's subsequent Best Actor win - but, prior to the event, her stylist Georgia Medley says she'd never seen her "so excited or happy" when trying on the dream dress.

The gown was created by Belgian designer Glenn Martens, who made his haute couture debut as a guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier's spring/summer 2022 collection in January.

"As soon as I saw the Glenn Martens Jean Paul Gaultier Couture collection, I just knew this dress would need a red-carpet moment," Medley tells us. "I always like to capture a moment with Jada for any red carpet, but even more so for the biggest red-carpet of all..."

The gown features an enormous ruffled skirt that cascades out into a show-stopping train, with a ruched zip-up bodice and a high neck, all in a deep emerald green. She finished the look with matching green platform sandals and G by Glenn Spiro earrings in titanium and diamonds.

"It was the first choice and in the works for weeks," explains Medley. "I wanted Jada to look and feel like herself, but on another level. It's regal, elegant, fashion-forward and divine."

As for that colour, Medley says she knew it would perfectly complement Will Smith's charcoal suit.

"I had a feeling she needed to be in green," she says. "Once I knew Will's style and colour of suit, there was no other choice but to go for the emerald green."

Pinkett Smith loved the dress as soon as she tried it on. "It was her number one choice," says Medley. "I've never seen her so excited or happy!"

Of course, with such an enormous train came some logistical issues, with Medley describing carrying the dress as being "like cardio". "I had to make sure security knew how to step in for me and carry it properly!" she laughs.
